Pre-Stylers, What Are They & How Should I Use Them?
When I was kid, the curtain was closed on every trip to the barber shop with a generous blob of a very minimal selection of product.
There was the classic tub of generic blue wet look gel, which went in like jelly but dried like concrete, or the legendary Brylcreem, which went in like grease and remained like grease. Other options included one of either Dax or Black and White, both of which would remain bound to your follicles pretty much until your next monthly trim due to it being impermeable to both shampoo and water.
Thankfully, in more recent times, the choice of hair products on the market has grown exponentially. So much so that the choice can be baffling at times - do I need a clay or a cream, a putty or a paste?
Well here we’re going to bust the myths of pre-stylers. These are the products that you apply to your hair before you style it, rather than afterwards. These type of products can offer a host of benefits from improving condition to adding texture.
One of the first pre-styling products that guys seemed to welcome with open arms, salt spray has become an essential part of many people’s grooming arsenal.
What Does It Do?
Adds a beachy, gritty texture to hair. Subsequently, makes hair feel more dense and thick and can enhance waves.
How Do I Use It?
Spray into damp hair and either allow to dry naturally or diffuse (dry with a pronged attachment added to your hairdryer nozzle).
Who’s It For?
Those who prefer a looser, more natural look and texture. Great for short, choppy styles or mid length wavy looks.
What Does It Do?
Adds sheen and control to frizzy or unruly hair, makes it easier to style. Strengthens and adds volume to weak or fine hair.
How Do I Use It?
Add a five pence piece sized amount into your palm, rub hands together and distribute evenly through hair from base to tips.
Who’s It For?
Good for most hair types but particularly those with fine, weak or brittle hair. Works really well in mid and long hairstyles. Not advisable for those who prefer a dry, matte finish.
What Does It Do?
Intensively hydrates very dry or coarse hair.
How Do I Use It?
Rub a small amount in your palms to emulsify before adding throughout the hair from tips to root. Less is more, if you add too much initially then it can make hair appear too greasy and oily.
Who’s It For?
Those with very dry, coarse hair that is prone to breakage. If you have finer or softer hair then it will separate the strands too much.
A little tip: Our beard oil works great on hair also.
What Does It Do?
Adds weightless volume and lift to fine or limp hair.
How Do I Use It?
Either spray into hands, and work into the hair in sections or comb through with a wide tooth comb. Best followed with blow drying and can be layered with other products.
Who’s It For?
Those looking to add extra volume and lift but with little evidence of using product. Ideal for those with fine, flat hair worn a bit longer.
Be sure to check out the Ruffians product range, which offers an excellent hair cream and salt spray amongst other styling options.
