The Mullet: an Expert Barbers Guide
The modern mullet is officially the hairstyle of the decade. What was once a haircut of the brazen, the mullet now finds itself as not the if, but the when. Chances are you’re here piqued by curiosity, debating your inevitable trip to the barbers wherein a mullet will be the outcome. We spoke with expert barber Jaymarie Buckingham to talk all things mullets so next time you walk through the barbershop doors you’ll do so as an expert in the field. Business in the front, party in the back.
The mullet has gone through many eras — from ’80s Billy Ray Cyrus to 00’s Sports stars (we see you, Sir David Beckham) to now. Why do you think it keeps coming back?
Because it knows how to reinvent itself. Every era gives the mullet a new personality — from rockstar to sporty to high-fashion street style. It’s bold, it’s fun, and it instantly shows you’re not afraid to stand out.
How would you define a mullet haircut in your own words?
Short in the front and sides, longer in the back — but with attitude. It’s a mix of clean and messy, structure and movement. It doesn’t follow the rules, and that’s what makes it great.

What are the main elements that make a mullet a mullet (in terms of cut and shape)?
• Noticeable length in the back
• A shorter, more shaped front
• Layers and texture for movement
• A strong outline and silhouette
As long as you’ve got that contrast, you’re in mullet territory.
How do you customize a mullet for different hair types (curly, straight, fine, thick)?
• Curly: Work with the curl pattern to get shape without frizz.
• Straight: Add texture so it doesn’t fall flat.
• Fine: Keep the top fuller and use light products.
• Thick: Remove weight so it feels cool and easy to wear.
It’s all about tailoring the cut so it feels natural for that person.

How do fades or tapers fit into modern mullet styles?
They make the mullet feel fresh. A clean fade on the sides keeps everything sharp and wearable, while the back gets to be the star. It’s the perfect mix of barbering and shaggy rock’n’roll vibes.

What advice would you give someone thinking about getting a mullet for the first time?
Think about your style and how bold you want to go — there’s a whole spectrum. Bring inspo photos to your hair appointment and be open to your hairstylist or barber’s suggestions. Start with a softer version if you’re unsure, and remember: styling makes a huge difference.
What’s the most memorable mullet transformation you’ve done?
I had a client who hadn’t had a haircut in four years — his hair was all the way down to the middle of his back. He’d been seeing loads of mullets and shags on Instagram and TikTok and decided he was ready for a big change. We went for a modern mullet with a mid-forehead fringe and brought the back up just above his shoulders, adding lots of texture and movement. The result was so cool — you could see his confidence shoot up the second he looked in the mirror. Since then, we’ve been having fun experimenting with different fringe lengths and trying out new variations of the mullet to keep the look evolving.
